Some of the procedures patients ask about, such as premium intraocular lens (IOL) upgrades and certain interventional dry eye treatments, are not fully covered by insurance and involve an out-of-pocket cost. CareCredit is one financing option many of our patients use to spread that cost over time.

CareCredit is a healthcare credit card accepted by many ophthalmology, dental, vision, and medical practices across the United States. It is a third-party lender, not part of Surgical Eye Experts. You apply directly with CareCredit. Approval, credit limits, promotional offers, and interest rates are determined by CareCredit based on the information you provide. According to CareCredit, the card can be used for both planned procedures and unexpected costs at participating providers. Promotional financing options vary and may include short-term plans with deferred interest if paid in full within the promotional period, or longer-term plans with reduced fixed interest rates. What Insurance Typically Covers

Most medically necessary ophthalmology services are covered by Medicare and commercial insurance. Coverage varies by plan, so we encourage you to verify your benefits before scheduling. Common categories include:

• Standard cataract surgery with a monofocal IOL (covered by Medicare Part B and most commercial plans).
• Glaucoma diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment (including SLT laser and many MIGS implants).
• Pterygium removal when symptomatic.
• YAG capsulotomy after cataract surgery.
• Prescription medications for dry eye, glaucoma, and other conditions.

What Typically Involves an Out-of-Pocket Upgrade

Some technologies are categorized by Medicare and commercial insurers as elective upgrades. Insurance covers the standard procedure; the patient pays the difference for the upgrade. Common examples in our practice include:

• Light Adjustable Lens (RxSight LAL) - the only IOL that can be fine-tuned after surgery using UV light.
• Toric IOLs for correcting astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery.
• Multifocal and extended depth-of-focus IOLs for reducing dependence on glasses for multiple distances.
• IPL therapy (OptiLight) for chronic dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (often not covered).

We provide an itemized breakdown of any upgrade fees in writing before you commit to a procedure. There are no surprise charges added after surgery.
